Late Goal Dooms Pacific Women's Water Polo Against Cal State Northridge

Apr 27, 2013

The No. 8 seed Pacific women's water polo team fell to fifth-seeded Cal State Northridge on a last-second goal in a consolation semifinal Saturday as part of the Big West Tournament at UC Irvine's Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Junior Elise Martin led Pacific (16-15) with three goals while freshman Taylor Adair added a pair of scores. Junior goalkeeper Michele Relton finished with nine saves.

Adair got Pacific on the board early in the first quarter before Cal State Northridge (22-12) tied it at 1-1 on its ensuing possession. The Matadors went up 2-1 on a goal from set midway through the frame, but Martin tied it up on a cross-cage goal with just 31 seconds left in the period.

The Tigers came out firing in the second quarter as goals from Martin and junior Rebecca Wright gave Pacific a 4-2 lead three minutes into the frame. CSUN pulled back to within one midway through the quarter, and neither team would score the rest of the way as the Tigers led by one at the break.

Both teams started slow to open the third quarter. The Matadors tied the game at 4-4 on Katie Kammer's penalty goal at the 3:23 mark before taking the lead on Kammer's second score of the period with one minute remaining.

CSUN extended its lead to two, 6-4, early in the fourth period before freshman Gracie Smith tallied for the Tigers, cutting the Matadors' lead to one with seven minutes left. A power-play goal restored CSUN's two-score advantage with 3:38 on the clock, but Martin answered for Pacific on its next possession to pull the Tigers back to within one.

After drawing an exclusion, Adair leveled the score at 7-7 with two minutes left.  Both teams would have opportunities down the stretch but it would be the Matadors who scored with 24 seconds left to break the deadlock. Pacific's last chance came up short as CSUN hung on for the win.

Kammer and Jenny Jamison each scored twice for the Matadors while goalkeeper Kiernan Davis blocked six shots.

Pacific will play for seventh place tomorrow at 11 a.m. versus the loser of the UC Santa Barbara-UC Davis match.
