Pacific Baseball Drops Game Two at UC Riverside, 11-6
Junior catcher Jason Taasaas went four-for-five with an RBI and 1B Erik Lockwood added two hits and an RBI, but UC Riverside took game two from Pacific, 11-5, Saturday in Riverside.
The Highlanders scored nine runs in the first four innings and never looked back. Eight of UC Riverside's 15 hits went for extra innings.
UC Riverside's 3B Joe Chavez hit a solo homer in the first to put the Highlanders on the board, and 1B Francisco Tellez added a solo homer in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Pacific cut the gap in half in the third inning, as 3B J.J. Wagner doubled to center and came in to score on an RBI single from SS Dustin Torchio.
But UC Riverside tallied four in the their half of the third inning, as Chavez, RF David Andreise and DH Kyle Boudreau each hit RBI doubles. LF Phil Holinsworth added an RBI single to chase Pacific starter, sophomore RHP Michael Benson.
Freshman RHP Patrick Weigel entered and escaped further damage with a double-play ball to end the inning.
The Tigers' rallied in the fourth, as freshman DH/LF Gio Brusa was hit by pitch, Taasaas singled to center and senior 2B Tyger Pederson reached on an error to load the bases. Senior RF Jacob Goulder's hot shot up the middle couldn't be handled as the Tigers pulled within 6-2 and had the bases loaded with one out.
But UCR LHP Ben Doucette posted a strikeout and an fly out to curtail the Tigers' momentum.
The Highlanders seized control in the fourth, as they tallied three runs on three hits, with Andriese posting a two-run single through the right side to take a 9-2 lead.
Lockwood doubled home Torchio in the fifth, but Doucette left two Tigers stranded on base.
Doucette (2-2) finished with two earned runs allowed on five hits in five innings of work and picked up the win.
Riverside added a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Chavez and Clayton Prestridge.
Pacific picked up a run in the seventh, as Lockwood reached on an error and Brusa singled, followed by an RBI single from Taasaas.
The Highlanders made it 11-4 in the eighth as Chavez posted an RBI double.
In the ninth, the Tigers picked up two more runs as Lockwood singled, LF/SS Brett Sullivan walked, Taasaas singled to load the bases, and the Highlanders committed a throwing error trying to turn a double-play.
Lockwood recorded all three outs while pitching in the eighth, while RHP Bryce Lombardi added 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
Taasaas' four-hit game was his first of the season and eighth multi-hit game of the year. Brusa and CF Tyler Sullivan have each hit in six-straight games for Pacific.
The Tigers fall to 9-20 overall, 2-6 in the Big West, while UC Riverside improves to 16-14 overall, 5-3 in Big West play.
Game three of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
