Pacific Baseball Opens Three-Game Set Against Long Beach Friday
The Pacific baseball team opens a three-game conference series against Long Beach State 6 p.m. Friday. The Tigers return to Klein Family Field for the first time in over two weeks to begin a stretch of 16 out of 24 games at home.
Pacific last played at home on March 19, an 11-4 win over Fresno State as the Tigers scored a season-high in runs.
The Tigers are 4-3 at Klein Family Field this season. Pacific is hitting .295 at the friendly confines of their home ballpark with wins over San Jose State, UNLV, Gonzaga and Fresno State.
Pacific senior LHP John Haberman (0-3, 8.44 ERA) will get the start in Friday's game one. Haberman tossed a shutout inning of relief Tuesday at Fresno State. The Tigers' bullpen combined for 5.1 shutout innings in the ballgame, give the Pacific offense a chance to overcome a 4-0 deficit. The Tigers scored the final three runs of the game, but left the tying run stranded at second in the ninth to fall 4-3.
Long Beach State will counter with RHP Shane Carle in game one. Carle has a 3.35 ERA in 43 innings, but has a 1-4 record. He's struck out 33 against 12 walks.
In Saturday's 2 p.m. game two, RHP Michael Benson will take the mound for Pacific. Benson is 2-2 in 42.0 innings with a 3.43 ERA. In his last outing, he took the loss to No. 5 Cal State Fullerton, lasting 4.2 innings.
The 49ers will start LHP Jake Stassi in game two. Stassi is 2-1 on the year with a 2.73 ERA in 29.2 innings.
Long Beach State RH David Hill draws the starting assignment in Sunday's 1 p.m. game three. Hill is 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA in 31.2 innings pitched. Pacific's Sunday starter is TBA.
The Tigers enter the second Big West conference of the year at 7-16 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The 49ers are 11-16 overall and 2-1 in Big West action, taking two of three from Cal State Northridge last weekend.
