Pacific Women's Water Polo Falls In OT In Regular Season Finale At UC Davis

Apr 20, 2013

In its regular season finale, the No. 20 Pacific women's water polo team saw its halftime lead erased before falling to 18th-ranked UC Davis, 6-5, in overtime Saturday at the Aggies' Schaal Aquatics Center.

Junior Elise Martin led Pacific (16-13, 1-6 Big West) in scoring with a pair of goals. Junior goalkeeper Michele Relton finished with 12 blocks in a complete-game effort.

Each team found the back of the cage in the first frame as the score was even at 1-1 after the opening eight minutes. UC Davis (14-15, 1-6 BWC) took a one-goal lead early in the second, but Martin knotted things at 2-2 before freshman Gracie Smith scored from just outside five meters to give Pacific a 3-2 lead midway through the quarter. Sophomore Brydie Pye would score late in the period as the Tigers took a 4-2 lead into intermission.

The hosts mounted a charge in the third quarter, holding Pacific scoreless while notching two goals to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the final frame. Neither squad was able to break the deadlock in the final eight minutes as both teams turned the ball over late in the period, sending the game into overtime.

UC Davis won the opening sprint to start OT and promptly scored on its first possession. After another goal from the Aggies, Martin trimmed the host's lead to one, 6-5, late in the first overtime period. The second OT frame saw both teams fail to score as the Aggies' defense kept Pacific off the board to secure the win.

Jessica Dunn paced UCD with two goals while goalkeeper Riane Woods notched eight saves.

Pacific will now travel to Irvine for the Big West Tournament next weekend. As the eighth seed, the Tigers will take on top-seeded Hawai'i on Friday, April 26, at noon at UCI's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
