Pacific Women's Water Polo Places Eighth At Big West Tournament

Apr 28, 2013

The No. 20 Pacific women's water polo team saw its 2013 campaign come to a close Sunday when it fell to seventh-seeded UC Davis, 10-4, in the seventh-place game of the Big West Tournament at UC Irvine's Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Juniors Malena Prlain and Elise Martin, along with sophomore Noelle Mann and freshman Gracie Smith, each scored for Pacific (16-16). Junior goalkeeper Michele Relton tallied seven saves in four quarters of work, giving her 371 saves on the year.

The opening moments of the first quarter saw UC Davis (15-17) jump out to a quick 2-0 lead before Smith scored from set with 4:58 on the clock to get the Tigers on the board. The Aggies tacked on a late goal, regaining a two-goal margin at the end of the first period.

Prlain brought Pacific back to within one, 3-2, with 6:05 on the clock in the second quarter, but UCD would go on a 4-0 run to end the frame, taking a 7-2 lead into halftime. The Aggies extended their lead to eight, 10-2, after three quarters, holding the Tigers scoreless for 14 minutes.

Martin broke Pacific's scoring drought early in the fourth quarter before Mann found the back of the cage with just a little more than one minute left, resulting in the final score.

Carmen Eggert led all scorers with five goals while Kathryn Bailey added two goals. Goalkeeper Riane Woods notched 12 saves through three quarters before being replaced by Jillian Wilding.

Pacific finished its 2013 season with a 16-16 record, just the third time in school history that the Tigers have finished .500 or better.
