Summer Hours at Pacific

RE:      Summer hours at University of the Pacific

"Summer hours" in Stockton and Sacramento have allowed our employees to enjoy flexibility during the quieter summer months at University of the Pacific. In some cases, however, summer hours have hindered our ability to serve students and others on Friday afternoons. Last October I charged the Summer Hours Review Committee to lead a campus-wide discussion about the value of summer hours for our employees and their impact on University business. I thank the Summer Hours Review Committee for their superb job canvassing opinions about summer hours and for the thorough report summarizing their findings.

After reading the committee's report and consulting with advisory groups, the Cabinet and I have made the decision that summer hours will remain in effect in Stockton for summer 2013. They will be observed from June 3-August 2, 2013. In Sacramento, Dean Jay Mootz will make decisions about summer scheduling for the McGeorge School of Law. He will communicate those decisions to our McGeorge staff soon.

Beginning next year, in summer 2014,  "summer flex hours" will replace our customary "summer hours." All Stockton offices will be open for full business hours throughout the year, although business hours will shift earlier in the day during the summer. Supervisors and staff will work together to determine how employees in their office can have flexibility while also ensuring service to students, external groups, and one another. This will likely involve staggered scheduling, cross training and, above all, teamwork. In order to make summer flex hours work smoothly, Pacific's flextime policies will need significant review and updating. We will work on this in the coming months and have a new policy in place by January 1, 2014. This policy will guide offices as they work together to embrace summer work flexibility and superior customer service.

Again, for June and July 2013, our past summer hours practice will remain the same. Work hours for most non-exempt employees will be Monday-Thursday from 7:30am-4:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch break, and Fridays from 7:30am-1pm with no lunch break. Exempt employees can also adjust their summer schedules with supervisory approval. Last summer, some divisions, such as Development and Student Life, arranged for office coverage on Friday afternoons; the relevant vice president will decide if that practice will continue in his or her division. For all offices, please ensure your summer schedules are clearly communicated to students and external constituents. Regular business hours will resume in Stockton on August 1, 2013.
