Women's Water Polo Tigers Fall To Top Seed Hawai'i In First Round Of Big West Tournament
In its opening game of the 2013 Big West Tournament, the eight-seeded Pacific women's water polo team fell to top seed Hawai'i, 7-2, Friday at UC Irvine's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Juniors Malena Prlain and Rebecca Wright each tallied for Pacific (16-14). Junior goalkeeper Michele Relton finished with 13 saves, keeping the Tigers in it throughout the first half with 10 saves in the opening two quarters.
After a slow start from both teams, Hawai'i (19-9) scored its first goal of the game with one minute left in the first. Prlain answered for the Tigers on their next possession, tying the game at 1-1 at the end of the opening quarter. UH would score midway through the second frame to take a 2-1 lead, and neither side tallied the rest of the way as the Wahine led by one at the half.
Hawai'i broke the game open in the third quarter as Amarens Genee scored two of the Wahine's three goals in the frame. Pacific failed to find the back of the cage for the second straight quarter as UH took a 5-1 advantage into the final period. Hawai'i would go up by five, 6-1, early in the fourth before Wright snapped Pacific's scoreless drought with 6:05 on the clock.
The Wahine tallied once more with a little more than five minutes left as the Tigers were unable to generate enough offense to make a comeback.
Genee, Caity Lopes da Silva and Zoe Respondek each scored twice for Hawai'i. Goalkeeper Amy Carlson blocked six shots through three quarters before Clair Babinski notched two saves in the fourth period.
Pacific resumes play tomorrow at noon and will face the loser of the Long Beach State-Cal State Northridge match.
