12/7 UPDATE: Pacific's men's water polo team beat Stanford 11-10 in the semifinal match. They will play the USC Trojans for the NCAA National Championship Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. For more information on the semifinal match, please visit the Pacific Athletics website.
The No. 1 University of the Pacific men's water polo team earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, it was announced late Sunday evening. Pacific will play Saturday, Dec. 7, at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center against Stanford in the semifinal round at 2:45 p.m.
"Obviously, it means a lot for our program," head coach James Graham said. "Our team has put in so much hard work this season, and we were a bit on edge after the MPSF semifinals. But we seized the moment on Sunday and now have a tremendous opportunity next weekend to compete for the NCAA Championship."
At 22-4, the Tigers have been ranked No. 1 the last four weeks, but came in third at the MPSF Championship. With USC taking the MPSF tournament crown and taking the automatic bid, the Tigers came away with the first of two at-large selections. Fellow MPSF member Stanford drew the third seed in the NCAA Tournament after finishing second at the MPSF Tournament. The Tigers posted a 4-3 record against the NCAA field this season, taking two of three from Stanford, splitting the regular season meetings with USC before a MPSF semifinal loss on Saturday, and taking a win over St. Francis Brooklyn at the Brown Bruno Fall Invite in September.
In action on Thursday, Dec. 5, Stanford (21-5) defeated Whittier College (19-12) to move to the semi-finals, and St. Francis Brooklyn advanced to the semifinals with a 6-5 win Thursday over UC San Diego. St. Francis will play USC in the earlier game of the semifinals on Saturday. The winner of Pacific and Stanford will face the winner of No. 1 USC and No. 11 St. Francis Brooklyn for the national championship.
The national championship game will start at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The two teams who fall in the semifinals will meet in the third place game at 1 p.m. Sunday. All four games will be streamed online at NCAA.com/LiveSchedule.
