Message from the Chair of the Board of Regents

Jan 10, 2013

To the University Community:

The Board of Regents continually examines and evaluates its processes and performance to strive for the best practices in governance. As we work to implement a culture of assessment across the University, we recognize that this practice must extend to every level of leadership. The Board of Regents has therefore requested a "360 Degree" style assessment of President Eibeck's performance. This type of leadership review is consistent with best practice for governance in higher education and has the full support of the Board and the President. I commend President Eibeck for her leadership and her willingness to embrace this process to enhance the leadership at the University.

The 360 Degree assessment will involve interviews with a wide range of representative students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The assessment will begin in conjunction with the January board meeting and be completed with a report to the full Board at its April meeting.

The Regents have retained Terrence MacTaggart to lead the assessment. Dr. MacTaggart is a senior fellow with the Association of Governing Boards, and is the former chancellor of the Minnesota State University system and the University of Maine system.

Dr. MacTaggart will work with the Board Chair and the President to identify appropriate individuals and groups representing all constituencies to be involved in the interviews. In addition, Dr. MacTaggart will review any additional comments provided to him at tjm@maine.edu.

Best regards,

Kathleen Lagorio-Janssen
Chair, Board of Regents
