Jan 26, 2013

The Pacific women's water polo team split a pair of contests Saturday, Jan. 26, on the first day of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. The Tigers fell to No. 3 UCLA, 11-5, before rebounding to rout Azusa Pacific, 13-5.

Sophomores Brydie Pye and Taylor Adair led Pacific with four goals apiece in the Tigers' two matches. Junior goalkeeper Michele Relton continued her solid start to the 2013 season with double-digit save outings in both of Pacific's matches. She blocked 12 shots against the Bruins before recording a season high 14 saves versus Azusa Pacific. The Tigers' opening game saw UCLA race out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter before tacking on three goals in the second frame to build a 7-0 halftime lead. Pye broke the Bruins' scoring streak at the 2:33 mark of the third period to get Pacific on the board, but UCLA would answer to maintain its seven-goal advantage heading into the final quarter.

Pacific managed to outscore the Bruins in the fourth quarter, notching four goals to UCLA's three. Pye opened the scoring for the Tigers with her second of the game before Carter finished a power play at the 4:34 mark. Adair and Mann also got in on the act, converting a pair of 6-on-5 possessions down the stretch. Rachel Fattal led UCLA with two scores as the Bruins got goals from 10 different players. Sami Hill blocked 16 shots for UCLA before being replaced down the stretch. Pacific's afternoon match versus Azusa Pacific was a different story.

The Tigers scored 10 unanswered goals during the second and third quarters en route to an easy victory over the Cougars. The game was close through the first quarter as both squads netted three goals apiece in the first eight minutes. The rest of the match was all Pacific as the Tigers scored six times in the second quarter and added four goals in the third frame to take a 13-3 lead with one period left to play.

Seven different Tigers scored against APU while six players recorded two goals apiece. Azusa Pacific was paced by two goals from Alyssa Hess. Goalkeeper Jessica Armagost blocked six shots for the Cougars in a complete game effort. Pacific resumes play at the UCSB Winter Invitational tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. against No. 8 Loyola Marymount. The Tigers wrap up their stay in Santa Barbara versus CSU Bakersfield at 12:40 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
