Pacific Baseball Falls In Rubber Game At Creighton, 5-2
Senior 2B Tyger Pederson drove in a run with an RBI single and RHP Michael Benson was solid into the eighth, but the Creighton Blue Jays posted a 5-2 win in game three Sunday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
Creighton (10-4) tallied a pair of unearned runs in the first two innings and after Pederson's RBI single drove home senior SS Dustin Torchio in the fourth, Pacific cut the lead in half.
But the Blue Jays picked up a pair of runs in their half of the fourth, on a single and an RBI triple from 1B Reagan Fowler. Fowler scored on a wild pitch to give Creighton a 4-1 lead.
In the Tiger seventh, 1B Erik Lockwood singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on a Taylor Murphy RBI single to right. But with two on and one out in a 4-2 ballgame, the Tigers lined into a double play to end the threat.
The Blue Jays tacked on a run in the eighth off three Tiger pitchers, as SS Alex Staehely walked, Fowler singled and after an intentional walk, C Kevin Lamb lined out to right for a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
2B/RHP Jake Peter, who finished the series 9-for-13 at the plate, recorded his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Torchio and DH Brett Sullivan each finished one-for-four as the Tigers had five hits off of five Creighton pitchers. Taylor Elman (1-0) earned the win, tossing two-thirds of an inning after starter Brett Swain allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings. LHP Mark Winkelman allowed one earned in three innings before RHP Nick Highberger (1.0, eighth) and Peter closed out the game.
Benson allowed three earned runs in seven innings, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Pacific will return home to face Fresno State at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Klein Family Field.
