Pacific Sand Volleyball Team Falls In First-Ever Sand Match At Saint Mary's
Playing their first-ever match in the emerging sport of Sand Volleyball, the Tigers fell on the road at Saint Mary's, 5-0, on Thursday, March 14, in Moraga. The match was Pacific's first of the 2013 season while the Gaels improved to 3-0 on the year.
"It was a great day to see our girls compete in sand volleyball," said head coach Greg Gibbons. "They added a new chapter in Pacific Athletics being the first team to compete in sand volleyball. It was great as their coach to see how excited they were to play and their drive to get better. I am proud of our girls and look for us to continue to improve."
Setting foot in the sand for the first time in program history, the Tigers found themselves in a battle with a team that had already shaken off their first-match jitters two days prior. Playing best out of five, the Tigers had their chances throughout the afternoon as Pacific pushed three of the five matches to three-sets. For the Gaels, the set losses at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 positions were their first set losses of the young season as Saint Mary's had blanked its first two opponents of the season.
For the Tigers, the team of sophomore Katy Tagart and freshman Alicja Wilk were the first to take a set in the match as the young team rebounded from a first set, 21-10, loss to capture the second set of their match, 22-20. Despite the win in set two, the duo would fall in set three, 15-5, to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead over Pacific after two matches.
In match three, Pacific jumped out front of the host Gaels with a 21-18 win as sophomore Gillian Howard and freshman Mia Feiner took early control of their contest. After Saint Mary's responded with a 21-15 win in set two, the Tigers nearly pulled off the match victory as they battled back-and-forth before falling 15-13 in a close set three.
With the match wrapped up in the hands of the Gaels, the top two teams hit the court to finish up the day as both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams for the Tigers played close matches, but in the end fell. At No. 1, freshmen Kat Schulz and Anne-Sophie Bauer split their first two sets of the day as they dropped a close 22-20 decision in the opener before blasting back with a convincing 21-13 set two victory. On the other court, the Tigers' No. 2 pair, senior Hannah Clancy and junior Jennifer Sanders, fell in straight sets to their opponents as they went 21-15, 21-18 in their debut.
Pacific will be back on the courts at Moraga Commons at Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Mar. 19 when the Tigers take on USC on the neutral courts. The match against the Trojans is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
