Pacific Sand Volleyball: Whitson-Wilk Take Pacific's First Match But Tigers Fall To USC, 4-1
For the second time in 2013, the Pacific Tigers stepped on the sand as Pacific took on USC in sand volleyball action on Tuesday, March 19. Against the Trojans, the Tigers saw their young freshmen duo of Kimmy Whitson and Alicja Wilk take Pacific's first-ever victory at No. 5 doubles, but in the end, Pacific fell 4-1 to USC.
Hitting the court first for the Tigers, Whitson and Wilk put together Pacific's first victory in the sand as the duo defeated Kati Duddridge and Sam Hirschmann in three sets, 15-21, 21-19, 15-11. After falling in the opening set to the team from USC, Whitson and Wilk rebounded to take the next two sets and take home the victory. In the match, Wilk showed off her all-around game to lead the way as the newest Tiger posted 17 kills and 25 digs to go along with one ace. Not to be outdone, Whitson was right behind Wilk with 11 kils and 12 digs in the match.
Outside of Whitson and Wilk, the Tigers had a few shots at their first match victory as Pacific's No. 2 duo of junior Jennifer Sanders and freshman Anne-Sophie Bauer lost a close straight set match. The Tigers' No. 1 and No. 3 duos each took their second sets deep, but in the end were unable to muster a set victory against the Trojans.
Pacific is back in the sand on Saturday, March 23 when the Tigers travel just up the road to take on Sacramento State at the Horents home courts. The weekend match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
