TCU Rallies To Knock Off Pacific Baseball, 3-2, in 10 Innings

Mar 10, 2013

Senior LF Jacob Goulder and junior C Jason Taasaas each homered while Michael Benson carried a shutout into the ninth, but Texas Christian University rallied for a 3-2 win in 10 innings Sunday at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

Benson allowed just one runner to reach second base through the first eight innings, but on his 117th and final pitch, TCU 1B Kevin Cron picked up a two-run single to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the 10th, the Horned Frogs picked up a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a single for the walk-off win, 3-2.

Goulder opened the scoring in the top of the second, hammering a 2-1 fastball over the wall in left for his first home run of the season.

On the fourth, Jason Taasaas went opposite field for his first homer of the year. The fourth career homer for Taasaas gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Both home runs came off LHP Trevor Seidenberger, who lasted 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Benson cruised through eight innings. He faced two over the minimum, allowing only one runner to reach second base -- briefly. In the seventh, 2B Davy Wright singled with two out, and SS Keaton Jones hit a bloop single to left field. The ball dropped in, but Goulder fired to second and caught Wright coming back to the bag to end the inning.

After a leading off single in the second, Benson coaxed a double-play ball, and he received another double-play in the fifth after a leadoff walk. He faced the minimum through five, a leadoff single in the sixth, and in the seventh, TCU put together two baserunners for the first time just before Goulder threw out Wright.

However in the ninth, Benson issued a leadoff walk and after a single through the left side, a sacrifice and an infield popup, Benson fell behind 2-1 to 3B Jantzen Witte and then intentionally put him on to load the bases. Cron pulled a 1-0 pitch into left field to bring home two runners and tie the game.

RHP Kevin Hammann entered and ended the threat, but after the Tigers went in order in the 10th, Hammann walked the TCU leadoff man. Jones struck out trying to bunt. But LF Brett Johnson greeted LHP Travis Lumby with a single to left and CF Cody Jones hit a shot through second base an into left field to give the Horned Frogs the win.

Pacific falls to 5-9 on the season, while TCU improves to 5-9.

LHP Alex Young earned the win for TCU, moving to 2-1 on the year. Hammann (2-1) suffered his first loss, with no hits allowed in his two-thirds innings of work.

Benson's final line was 8.2 innings, six hits, two earned runs and a pair of strikeouts.

The Tigers will visit Oklahoma State on Tuesday, for a 4:30 p.m. start.
