Pacific Student-Athletes Excelled Academically in 2012-13
In addition to a successful year on the field, Pacific student-athletes excelled in the classroom in the 2012-2013 academic year.
A total of 10 student-athletes received a 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2012 semester while 21 student-athletes received a 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2013 semester. In addition, five of the student-athletes received consecutive 4.0 GPA's across both semesters.
The academic success was not limited to individual student-athletes. In fact, 12 out of 16 teams had a total team GPA above 3.0 in Fall 2012 while 15 out of 18 teams had a team GPA above 3.0 in the spring.
On average, the Fall 2012 Team GPA at Pacific was 3.11, while the Spring 2013 Team average GPA was 3.08.
In total, 27 student-athletes received All Big West Academic Honors. In order to be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at the institution prior to the season and compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
The 2012 Big West All-Academic Fall Team featured 9 Pacific student-athletes, including women's volleyball teammates Megan Birch, Hannah Clancy and Gabby Cowden, women's soccer athletes Kortney Agdeppa, Laura Hernandez, Kayla Vilalpando and Haylee Bettencourt and Women's Cross Country runners Micaela Todd and Cassie Rush.
The 2013 Big West All-Academic Winter Team featured 18 student-athletes from Pacific including Women's Basketball's Sam Pettinger, Baseball's Kyle Crawford and Erik Lockwood and Softball's Megan Allen, Nikki Armagost, Megan Fogelsong, Megan Hom and Amy Moore. Erik Cederwall and Alex Golding of Men's Tennis were honored as well as Gergana Boncheva, Iveta Masarova, Regina Suarez and Susan Te from Women's Tennis. Golfer Kevin Andrews was selected to the All-Academic team and Women's Water Polo saw Elise Martin, Malena Prlain and Michele Relton take home All-Academic honors.
In addition, 21 Pacific swimmers earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic honors including Jenna Chaplin, Sydni Johanson, Lydia Schramm, Dekel Shahaff, Allie Vetterlein, Shelby Bolin, Mallory McGowan, Shannon Mack, Becca Wyant, Kelsey Crowder, Kelsey Boreyko and Hayley Shillington on the women's side and Zachary Zlotoff, Cody Burkard, Oliver Simkovic, Cooper Rogers, Casey Fleming, Sean Dunnigan, RJ Barton, Brandon Chandler and Dai Wilson on the men's side.
Men's Water Polo saw Alex Malkis, Balazs Erdelyi, Alex Obert, Casey Fleming and Daniel Kemether receive academic recognition from the MPSF while Adam Troy, Patrick Tunnell, Matthew Houlihan and Javier Caceres received conference academic honors for Men's Volleyball.
Pacific Field Hockey excelled academically as well, receiving the 2012 Gladiator NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award for having a team GPA above 3.0. In addition, Emily Trudeau was selected to the NorPac All-Academic Team and received the Sheryl Johnson Academic Excellence Award, the highest academic honor given out by the conference.
Pacific placed Hannah Bettencourt, Molly Bettencourt, Leah Cofer, Dinah Compton, Molly Macierz, Lauren Peterson, Lindsay Sager, Doreen Stern, Emily Trudeau and Jenna Vivian on the 2012 Gladiator NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. Lindsay Sager was named a NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the Fall 2012 semester.
