Tigers Close Big West Tenure Versus Cal Poly Starting Thursday
The Pacific baseball team wraps the 2013 season and 43 years in the Big West with a three-game series against Cal Poly, opening Thursday night at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers meet Cal Poly (37-16, 15-9 BWC) for the final time as conference mates, with three games: Thursday at 6 p.m, Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. After 43 seasons in the Big West, Pacific will make the move to the West Coast Conference next year.
Pacific (14-37, 6-18 BWC) will also honor it's four seniors, OF Jacob Goulder, LHP Travis Lumby, 2B Tyger Pederson and 3B Dustin Torchio prior to Saturday's contest.
Pederson and Torchio are sprinting towards the finish line, offensively. Pederson has reached base in a team-high 15 consecutive games entering Thursday's action. Pederson carries an eight-game hit streak and has hit safely in 14 of the last 15 games, hitting .308 in that span. On the season, he has reached base in 42 of his 50 games, including 12 straight to open the season.
Torchio is hitting .344 in his 16 games with a four of doubles and six RBI. He has hit safely in 12 of those 16, with eight multi-hit games. Torchio leads Pacific with 18 multi-hit games this season. Since sliding over from SS to the 3B position he'd manned in 2011 and 2012, Torchio is hitting .317 in 19 games.
In Thursday's game one, the Tigers send RHP Jake Jenkins to the mound. Jenkins holds a 6.60 ERA in his 45.0 innings of work this season. Since settling into the rotation, Jenkins has a 4.55 ERA in his last 29.2 innings. He'll be opposed by Cal Poly RHP Joey Wagman, who is 11-3 on the year with a 2.99 ERA. In 96.1, the senior has 96 strikeouts.
On Friday in game two, the Tigers' LHP John Haberman gets the start. Haberman has a 2-5 record with a 4.83 ERA in 69.0 innings, but has struck out 45 on the year against 17 walks. the redshirt junior has settled into a groove in the rotation, as he has a 1.66 ERA (4 ER in 21.2 IP) in his last three outings, allowing just over a baserunner per inning with 16 strikeouts. Haberman earned the win last Saturday against UC Santa Barbara, tossing 7.1 innings with two earned runs allowed. He went over 14 innings between allowing runs after tossing eight shutout innings against UC Davis on May 10.
Cal Poly counters with LHP Matt Imhof in game two. Imhof is 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA. In 90.1 innings, he's struck out 86. He fanned 12 in 6.1 innings against Cal State Northridge last Saturday.
Pacific RHP Mike Hager gets the ball in Saturday's finale. The sophomore is 1-5 with a 6.05 ERA in 58.0 innings. Hager has posted 33 K's against 18 walks. Cal Poly will send RHP Casey Bloomquist to the mound in game three. The freshman is 6-1 with a 4.24 ERA in 46.2 innings.
