Tigers Drop Season Opener at Missouri
The Pacific women's soccer team opened the 2013 regular season with a 5-1 loss at Missouri on Friday, Aug. 23. It was the season opening match for both teams.
"It's important for our team to play nationally ranked teams to prepare ourselves for a conference that has several of them," said Head Coach Keith Coleman. "We will learn from this game and be better for it. I am proud of our team's effort and look forward to our game at Kansas on Sunday."
The match was scoreless for the first 10 minutes, but Missouri took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Danielle Nottingham at the 10:50 mark. Reagan Russell added a goal at the 25:38 mark to give Missouri a 2-0 lead that led to the same score at halftime. Pacific was outshot 6-2 in the first half.
Missouri scored again at 49:53, when Taylor Grant found the net to make it 3-0. Pacific senior Maricela Padilla scored Pacific's goal at 52:14, on an assist from freshman Alex Hussar. Reagan and Grant each scored again for Missouri to account for the 5-1 final.
Pacific was outshot 17-9 in the contest and Missouri had a 7-2 edge in corners. Padilla had three of the Tigers' shots, while junior Mirella Mattos added two shots. Pacific was called for 11 fouls, including a 9-2 differential in the first half.
Senior Tashia Long had three saves in goal for the Tigers, while freshman Lena Perry made her debut in goal.
Pacific is next in action with a match at Kansas 10 a.m. (PST) Sunday, Aug. 25.
