UCSB Pulls Away For Game One Win Over Pacific Baseball
LF Gio Brusa and CF Tyler Sullivan each tallied two hits, but UC Santa Barbara tallied late for a 12-1 win in game one against Pacific.
An RBI sacrifice fly from Taylor Murphy pulled Pacific within 2-1 in the middle of the fifth, but the Gauchos scored in the next four innings with 10 unanswered runs to turn an close game early into a comfortable 12-1 win.
RHP Jake Jenkins retired the first six he faced before UCSB pushed across two in the bottom of the third. After a single and a pair of hit batters loaded the bases, Jenkins coaxed an infield fly for the second out, but 2B Woody Woodward poked a two-run single to put the Gauchos on the board.
The Tigers responded in the fifth when Brusa singled to left, took second on a wild pitch, third on an infield groundout and came in to score on Murphy's sinking liner into left center field. Murphy's sac fly made the score 2-1, but it was all Gauchos after that.
After a single and a sacrifice bunt to open the inning, Joey Epperson picked up an RBI single for UCSB. Following a walk and a steal, Woodward hit a grounder up the middle, past the drawn in infield for two more runs.
LHP Kyle Crawford escaped further damage, but was touched for two runs in the sixth. After recorded two outs, the Gauchos posted three-straight singles with a pair of runs coming in on Brendan Trinkwon's single and ensuing run down between first and second.
In the seventh, UCSB added two more on a two-run home run by Tyler Kuresa, and the Gauchos added three in the eighth on a two-run single by Woodward and an RBI single from Cameron Newell.
RHP Austin Pettibone allowed five hits in eight innings for UCSB (30-21, 13-9 Big West), striking out four while walking one to move to 8-3 on the season. Jenkins took the loss with four earned runs in 4.1 innings. The Tigers fall to 13-35 on the season, 5-17 in Big West play.
Game two is Saturday at 1 p.m.
