Schulz, Whitson Lead Four Tigers Named to WCC All-Academic Teams
Eligable for the first time to receive academic honors, sophomores Kat Schulz and Kimmy Whitson were 2013 West Coast Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team on Wednesday as announced by the conference office. In addition to the two top honors, senior Megan Birch and sophomore Mia Feiner were named to the All-Academic Honorable Mention team.
To earn the distincition as a member of the academic all-conference team a player must own a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average while being a significant contributor to her team. The all-academic team is selected at the end of the the playing season and consists of 12 players.
Schulz, the Tigers' top hitter in 2013 has been perfect off the court as the sophomore has produced a 4.00 GPA in sports medicine, the highest mark among all 12 all-academic members in 2013. On the court, Schulz has produced 287 kills and 239 digs in her second season of play.
Joining Schulz on the all-academic team was Whitson, the Tigers' sophomore captain setter. Whitson earned the academic distinction as a Computing & Applied Economics major after posting a 3.81 GPA. On the court, Whitson leads the team with seven double-doubles on the year and has tallied 962 assists, 203 digs, 98 kills and 70 blocks.
Outside of the two sophomores on the first team, Birch and Feiner earned honorable mention honors for their work both on and off the court. For Birch, the award was the third academic award of her career after earning All-Big West academic honors in each of the two years she was eligible. For Feiner, the honorable mention honor marked the first academic award of her career in her first year eligible.
