Resident Artist Series featuring Igor Veligan, Patricia Shands, Darren Chan, Tom Knific, and The Merling Trio

Join us on Jan 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall for an evening of chamber music featuring works by Prokofiev, Rozsa, Schubert and Knific.  Performers will include Conservatory faculty Igor Veligan, violin, Patricia Shands, clarinet, Pacific alumnus Darren Chan, violin, and special guests Tom Knific and The Merling Trio.  

In residence at Western Michigan University, The Merling Trio has been hailed as a brilliantly distinguished group endowed with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision, and an impeccable blend of sound. Members include Renata Artman Knific, violin Bruce Uchimura, cello, and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano. 

Tom Knific, professor of bass and director of jazz studies at Western Michigan University, has a multi-faceted career as a composer, educator, and professional musician. He has four solo recordings to his credit and appearances on over 30 additional recordings. Mr. Knific has toured and recorded with many top names in the business including Gene Bertoncini, Randy Brecker, Art Farmer, Dave Brubeck, Fred Hersch, OPUS 21, and Philippe Entremont. He and Eric Marienthal co-led the "Dream Band" in the first live interactive jazz concert multi-cast world wide over the Internet. In 2004, he received the Down Beat magazine Achievement in Jazz Education award.

Tickets are $8 General Admission, $5 Seniors and Pacific faculty/staff.  Students with valid ID are admitted free.

The Merling Trio will present a master class on Jan 17 at 2 p.m. in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Tom Knific will present a jazz bass master class with the Brubeck Institute on Jan 17 at 11a.m. (location tbd). Admission is free.
