Excitement Builds for Men’s Water PoloThe Pacific men’s water polo team is making a splash in its first season with the West Coast Conference with their eye on the prize, improving to 10-1 overall and 2-0 this past weekend.
Taking on No. 4-ranked Cal in their first nationally televised game, the Tigers downed the Bears 7-6. Goran Tomasevic '14 and Balazs Erdelyi '14 finished with three goals each, and goalkeeper Alex Malkis '14 posted 15 saves, and garnered back-to-back MPSF player of the week honors. The previous week, more than 758 fans packed the stands at Kjeldsen pool in the team's second home game, as the Tigers controlled the pool for a 14-12 win against the Stanford Cardinal. Tomasevic, Kevin Oliveira '14 and Erdelyi each scored three goals and Malkis logged 14 saves, as the Tigers took sweet revenge for their one and only loss of the season against Stanford at the NorCal Tournament on September 21. The team's No. 3 ranking by the Collegiate Water Polo Association tied the program's highest ever ranking, moving up from the No. 5 position at the beginning of the season. This summer, Erdelyi, who received the prestigious Cutino Award at the end of last season, helped Hungary to a gold medal at the World University Games, while Alex Obert '15 earned a spot on the USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team for the 2013 FINA World Championships.
Meanwhile, in other action over the weekend, the men's tennis team went 9-0 in pre-season play on Sunday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego and the UC Davis Invitational on Sunday, October 6. Miguel Diaz '17 won in the singles final, 6-2, 6-1 and Denis Stolyarov '15 also won 6-2, 7-5 in the consolation singles final, both against Loyola Marymount. At the UC Davis Invitational, the Tigers won all seven matches played on Sunday.
Men's water polo will back in action next Saturday in Irvine for the SoCal Tournament. As the tourney's third seed, Pacific will face No. 15 Santa Clara in the first round at 10:50 a.m., and then either No. 6 UC Santa Barbara or No. 11 Concordia at either 4:50 pm or 6:15 pm. Saturday's action will take place at Corona del Mar High School.
