No. 3 Pacific Men's Water Polo Comes Back For 7-6 Win Over No. 4 Cal
No. 3 Pacific tallied three unanswered goals for a road win at No. 4 Cal Saturday, 7-6, in the Tigers' first nationally televised game. Seniors Goran Tomasevic and Balazs Erdelyi led the comeback, with Tomasevic posting the only fourth quarter goal. Goalkeeper Alex Malkis posted 15 saves.
Down 6-4 with 6:57 to go in the third quarter, Erdelyi ripped off two goals for Pacific to knot the game headed into the fourth quarter. With Malkis turning away seven Cal shots in the fourth quarter, Tomasevic finished with 6:04 left in the game for the eventual game winner. The Tigers shut down Cal's offense, holding the Bears scoreless for the final 14:37 of the match.
Pacific improves to 10-1 on the season, and 2-0 in MPSF play. Cal falls to 8-3 on the year and 0-1 in MPSF action.
The Tigers led 1-0 after the first quarter on a goal by Tomasevic, who tallied again from inside two meters for a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter.
But Cal answered with a a pair of goals to tie the match at 2-2. Casey Fleming gave Pacific a 3-2 advantage, but the Bears reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. Cal's first half tallies came via Luka Ivanovic, Colin Mulcahy, Blake Kelly, Hunter Gettelfinger and Aleksa Saponjic.
Erdelyi posted a skip-shot goal with the man advantage cut the margin to 5-4 with 37 seconds left in the first half.
Suponjic's third-quarter goal gave Cal a 6-4 lead with 6:37 left in the third quarter, but Malkis denied access to the cage from there on, while the Tigers offense came back.
Cal goalkeeper Michael Boggan finishing with 14 saves.
Tomasevic and Erdelyi finished with three goals a piece, with Fleming also providing a goal.
The game was live on Pac-12 Network, Pacific's first-ever appearance on national televison.
The Tigers are back in action next Saturday in Irvine, for the SoCal Tournament. The tourney's third seed, Pacific will face No. 15 Santa Clara in the first round at 10:50 am, and then either No. 6 UC Santa Barbara or No. 11 Concordia at either 4:50 pm or 6:15 pm. Saturday's action will take place at Corona del Mar High School.
