Pacific's Malkis named MPSF Water Polo Player of the Week
Pacific senior goalkeeper Alex Malkis was named men's water polo Player of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Monday.
Malkis made 14 saves in goal as No. 5 Pacific downed No. 3 Stanford Sunday in front of 758 fans at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. After the Tigers took the lead for the first time, 3-2, in the first quarter, his save while Pacific was shorthanded following an exclusion provided a shift in the game's momentum. The Tigers scored on the opposite end to go up two goals and the Cardinal could only claw back within a goal the rest of the way.
Six of Malkis' 14 saves came in the fourth quarter, as the Pacific defense slammed the door.
In 100 minutes in goal against Stanford, he has held the Cardinal to under half their goal output against other opponents. He had a 19-save effort against Stanford last week in the quarterfinals of the NorCal Tournament, in which the Tigers' fell in overtime.
Pacific is now 9-1 on the season, and 1-0 in MPSF play. The new national rankings will be released on Wednesday.
The Tigers are back in action next Saturday at 10:30 am at Cal, in a match that will air nationally on Pac-12 Network.
