Womn's Volleyball Downed By Saint Mary's, 3-0
The Pacific women's volleyball team dropped a Halloween contest to Saint Mary's Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-23).
Pacific entered the match with a scary-good 10-3 record all-time on Halloween, but the Tigers were haunted by unforced errors to fall to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in WCC play.
Senior Megan Birch led the Tigers with 12 kills, while hitting .400 for the match. Sophomore Kat Schulz added 10 kills and redshirt sophomore Anne-Sophie Bauer chipped in six kills. Sophomore setter Kimmy Whitson provided 31 assists and 10 digs, while freshman libero Lexi Elman posted 15 digs.
Madelyn Hutson paced Saint Mary's offensively, with 11 kills, hitting .526. Jordan Shaw added 10 kills for the Gaels, while Dalas Dodd posted 36 assists.
The Gaels opened set one with the first four points and stretched the lead to 10-3 on a service ace from Sarah Reams. The Tigers responded with five of the next seven points, including a pair of kills from Bauer. After SMC used a 5-2 to run to take the lead by seven, Pacific clawed back as Whitson set Birch for a kill. Whitson and Howard teamed for a block, and Elman placed a service ace to bring the Tigers within two. Feiner's ace closed the gap to just one, as Pacific trailed 19-18. But the Gaels regrouped with a kill from Kristina Graven and the Tigers would get no closer, as Saint Mary's took the set 25-19.
Saint Mary's used a 7-2 run to seize control of set two early, but Kat Schulz kept the Tigers within striking distance with a pair of kills. The Tigers climbed back to within two at 12-10 before a pair of attacking errors. The Gaels maintained a five-point advantage before winning a long rally for a 21-15 lead. After a kill from Schulz at the left pin, SMC posted a kill and a block to slam the door, 25-17. The Gaels out-hit the Tigers .308 to .051 in set two.
Birch drilled home three kills to open set three, but a pair of attack errors and a blocking error gave the Gaels a 6-3 lead. Saint Mary's pulled away via a 7-2 run. Pacific made its usual run to get close, drawing within 18-16 following a kill from Birch. Schulz's kill from the right pin tied the set at 20-20, but SMC gained the lead on an unforced error. Birch helped Pacific come back within one, at 24-23, but Hutson drilled home the winner for the sweep.
The Gaels hit .291 for the match (43 kills, on 110 attempts with 11 errors), while Pacific committed 17 errors, and had 40 kills on 116 attempts to hit .198 for the match.
Saint Mary's improves to 13-7, 9-3 in WCC action.
Pacific will head to Southern California next week for a Thursday contest at Loyola Marymount (7 p.m.) and a 1 p.m. Saturday contest at Pepperdine.
