Field Hockey Downed By Michigan State
The Pacific field hockey team dropped its season opener, 7-0, to Michigan State on Sunday at Stanford's Varsity Hockey Turf. The victory was the first of the season for the Spartans, who improved to 1-1 on the year.
The Spartans were lead by Allie Ahern, who notched a hat trick including the first goal of the game for Michigan State. The Spartans offensive attack tallied three goals in the first half on 14 shots, testing the Orange and Black's freshman goalkeeper Laura Pujade, who made 10 saves before giving way to redshirt sophomore Molly Macierz. Sophomore Maggie Corder also saw time in goal during the second half.
On offense, Pacific was unable to get past a tough Spartan defense for the majority of the contest. Senior Maggie Grindatti recorded a shot on goal for the Tigers.
Coach Andy Smith thought that the game was a learning experience for Pacific and expressed optimism for the remainder of the young season.
"I learned a lot today about individuals on this team today in a very positive way. It's the start of a journey for us. It's a new coaching staff, a new season, and a new system. It's going to take a while to set in. We'll get there. We'll be a very different team in November than we are now."
Pacific will look to rebound quickly when they face Missouri State on Monday morning at 11am in a designated home game at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley, Calif.
