No. 3 Pacific Men's Water Polo Downs No. 4 Stanford For Third At SoCal
Pacific men's water polo emerged from the SoCal Tournament with an 11-10 win over No. 4 Stanford and a third-place finish Sunday at UC Irvine.
The No. 3 Tigers received two goals each from seniors Balazs Erdelyi, Goran Tomasevic and Balazs Szabo, as well as sophomore Aleksandar Petrovic and junior Alex Obert. Freshman Ben Stevenson also tallied for the Tigers.
Tied 9-9 in the fourth quarter, Obert posted back-to-back goals for a two-goal lead and the Tigers held on to move to 13-2 on the season.
Stanford (10-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals from Alex Bowen and a score from Bret Bonanni.
But Szabo put Pacific on the board and Petrovic beat the first quarter clock to pull the Tigers within 3-2 after a period. Erdelyi tied the match a minute in to the second quarter, but the Cardinal surged ahead on a pair of goals.
Erdelyi scored again and Stevenson's goal knotted the game at 5-5 at halftime.
Tomasevic's third-quarter goal put Pacific on top, only to see Stanford answer 26 secons later. Petrovic and Szabo found the back of the net, but Bonanni and Forrest Watkins responded for Stanford to tie the game again, at 8-8 in the fourth.
Tomasevic struck again, for a 9-8 lead, only to see Bonanni pick up his fourth goal 21 seconds later to even things up at 9-9.
With 2:56 remaining, Obert finished with Pacific on the power-player, and after the Tigers ran clock, Obert put the game out of reach with 35 seconds remaining. Bonanni's fifth came with 25 seconds left, but the Tigers held on.
Pacific is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday against UC Davis.
