Verbeek And Diaz Upend Stanford Pair At Battle In The Bay Classic

Oct 12, 2013

The Pacific men's tennis team continued action at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Saturday at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco. Sophomore Sem Verbeek and freshman Miguel Diaz were the only Tigers in action.

Verbeek and Diaz defeated Stanford's Nolan Paige and Trey Strobel in the quarterfinal round by a score of 8-6. Verbeek and Diaz then lost by a count of 8-4 in the semifinals to the No.2 seeded team of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa from USF.

In singles action, Verbeek dropped a straight set match in the quarterfinals to David Sofaer of Pepperdine.

"It was a great win to start the day and then two tough losses to end the day," said Head Coach Ryan Redondo. "Both teams played very well to beat us. I am pleased with the victories over Cal and Stanford and our singles were decent. We still have a lot to keep improving on and are working hard. We will get back to the practice courts and look forward to the ITA Regionals."
