Emeritus Regent Robert M. Long Passes Away

Apr 7, 2014

Emeritus Regent Robert "Bob" M. Long, who served as Regent from 1981-1995, passed away on March 27 from complications of an illness. He was 75.

Mr. Long, who had a successful career as President, CEO and Chairman of Longs Drug Stores, provided strong leadership and support for the University, particularly the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences that is named for his uncle.

The Long family has a deep involvement with Pacific. Mr. Long's father, Joseph Milton Long, received an honorary degree from Pacific in 1972. Mr. Long's uncle, Thomas J. Long, served on the Board of Regents from 1969-1980. A cousin, Thomas Sweeney '64, graduated from the School of Engineering and Computer Science and served as a Pacific Regent from 1995-2004. Two other family members are graduates of the University.

Thomas J. and Joseph M. Long encouraged former Pacific President Robert Burns to establish the pharmacy school at Pacific in 1955. Their support helped establish the first building on the north campus, which they dedicated to the memory of their parents, Edward and Alice Long.

Mr. Long began working for Longs Drug Stores, which was founded by his father and uncle, at age 16 and progressed through the ranks. He retired in 2003 and was named Chairman Emeritus.  At that time, Dr. Donald Sorby, who also served on the board said, "Bob Long has contributed greatly to his family's legacy.  Since his first leadership role with the company in 1975, Longs Drugs has grown from a chain of 82 stores generating annual sales of $340 million to a chain of 464 stores generating in excess of $4.4 billion in annual sales."

In 2008, CVS Caremark acquired Longs Drug Stores, folding into its portfolio Longs' 521 retail locations in California, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona, as well as its PBM services.

Mr. Long served as President and a Trustee of the Joseph and Vera Long Foundation, named after his father and mother and established to support higher education, arts and culture, wildlife preservation, and social and human services. The Foundation supports educational programs, including at University of the Pacific. Bob and his wife, Eliane, have also been generous supporters of Pacific.

Plans for a memorial service are being finalized. Condolence letters can be sent to Office of Robert Long, PO Box 3827, Walnut Creek CA 94598-0827. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
