Hector Escalante to be Pacific's first Ombudsperson

Hector Escalante '97, who has served as Learning and Development Program Manager for University of the Pacific for the past two years, has been named the University's first Ombudsperson. He will assume his new role on Jan. 5. 

"Hector's background in conflict management, together with his exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, strong ethical framework and deep understanding of Pacific's culture and structure will serve him well in this important role," said Vice President Mary Lou Lackey. "I am delighted to announce that he will be our Ombuds." 

Escalante will report directly to Lackey. The Ombuds is charged with serving as an impartial conflict-resolution resource and providing confidential and informal assistance to the University's staff, faculty, student employees and administrators.  The position was established as a result of joint resolutions by the Academic Council and the Staff Advisory Council.

"I am truly honored to be selected the Ombudsperson for University of the Pacific," Escalante said. "I'm looking forward to offering my talents, skills and experiences to the wonderful faculty and staff on all three campuses." 

A second major function will be assisting with the continual assessment and improvement of the University campus climate by analyzing policies, official procedures and common practices, identifying patterns or problem areas, recommending revisions and improvements to the University community and providing training and educational programs to staff, faculty and administration on conflict resolution.   

The position supplements the University's existing resources for conflict resolution, but is not part of the University's Human Resources complaint and grievance policies and procedures. While this position supports faculty and staff in understanding resources and standard procedures, is not a means of bypassing University procedures. 

Escalante earned an associate degree in English at San Joaquin Delta Junior College while serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He transferred to Pacific for his bachelor's degree in English with a Spanish emphasis. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was named the Outstanding Graduating Senior. He went on to earn a master's in fine arts with an emphasis in creative nonfiction from National University and a master's in curriculum and instruction from Pacific. He has begun his doctorate in education at Pacific and will resume his studies in the near future. 

He first started working for Pacific in 2010 as an adjunct professor. As Learning and Development Program Manager, he had responsibility for the design, development and implementation of training programs to promote career development for both faculty and staff, including courses in conflict management, ethical responsibilities and listening with emotional intelligence. He also led seminars in team building. 

His career has included administrative positions with Comcast and Heald College. At Heald, his roles included Associate Director of Academic Affairs and Director of General Education. In addition, he taught courses in English, writing, speech and business at Pacific, Heald College, DeVry University, the University of Phoenix, and Axia College.
