Pacific Heads South To Start 2014 At The Asics Invitational
University of the Pacific's men's volleyball team for the final time begins a new campaign as the Tigers head south to UC Santa Barbara to take part in the 50th annual Asics Invitational. The Tigers will be one of 10-teams at the long-running tournament that will take place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4. The two-day tournament will feature round robin pool play on Friday to determine seeding for the championship rounds on Saturday.
Playing with the Tigers in pool play on day one are: Stanford, Cal Baptist, UCSB, and Harvard. On the other side in Pool B are: Long Beach State, UCLA, Cal State Northridge, UC San Diego, and IPFW. On Friday, each team will play round-robin against the other four teams in their pool. These matches will be best of three sets exhibitions and will not count towards overall records. After the conclusion of all matches on Friday, records will be compiled and seeds will be assigned within each pool. On Saturday, each team will play its corresponding seed in the opposite pool (i.e. the top seed in Pool A will play the top team in Pool B). These matches will count towards teams' overall records.
Pacific kicks off its tournament with a match against UCSB at 10 a.m. They follow with matches against Harvard and Stanford before the lunch break. Matches resume at 3 p.m. with the Tigers taking on Cal Baptist in the final match of the afternoon.
Leading the Tigers into the fray of the 2014 season is Off The Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason Second Team All-America selection, senior Javier Caceres. Caceres is coming off his third-straight All-MPSF selection after leading the MPSF in digs per set, totaling 286 digs in 105 sets for an average of 2.72 per set.
