Pacific Men's Volleyball Pulls Away From No. 14 Northridge, 3-1

University of the Pacific men's volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign with a 3-1 win over No. 14 Cal State Northridge at the Univrsity of California, Santa Barbara Asics Invitational Saturday in Santa Barbara. Freshman outside hitter Thomas Hodges racked up 18 kills while hitting .421 to lead Pacific.

Pacific hit .321 in the first set, taking a 1-0 lead with a 26-24 first set win. Northridge answered with a 27-25 win in set two. But the Tigers used a 5-0 run midway through the third set to pull away with a 25-19 third set victory. Pacific hit .600 in set four, jumping out to a 7-1 lead early and cruising to a 25-16 win to take the match.

Junior middle blocker Tommy Carmody and sophomore hitter Christian Franceschi each added seven kills while sophomore middle blocker Marty Ross added six kills with a a .417 hitting percentage.

Hodges added two solo blocks and 11 assisted blocks, while senior libber Javier Caceres pulled up 17 digs. Sophomore Marco Grasso paced Pacific at setter with 41 assists.

Pacific out-blocked the Matadors 22 to 12.5 for the match to move to 1-0 on the season.

Jakub Ciesla led the Matadors with 12 kills.
