Administrative hires and transitions over the summer
The following summarizes a number of administrative changes that occurred over the summer, including interim appointements for open positions.
Academic Division, including Enrollment and Technology
Vernon Smith was appointed vice provost for distributed learning. He began the new position on June 23. In this new role, Smith will collaborate with enrollment management, technology and other units to ensure that students, particularly working adults, receive the best experience possible, regardless of program location. Smith will work closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Professional and Continuing Education to support faculty in teaching needs and professional development for instruction, including enhancements in using technology in teaching. Meredith Kelley was appointed interim vice provost for enrollment management effective July 1. She previously was vice provost for enrollment management at California State University, Chico, and brings 30 years of progressively responsible administrative experience in enrollment management and financial aid. Read more>> The position was vacated by Arlene Cash, who stepped down in May in order to relocate to Georgia to be closer to her family.
Chris Goff, associate professor of mathematics, has been appointed assistant provost for diversity. Goff will oversee all University diversity activities in the Academic Division, including the implementation of the Faculty Diversity Hiring Plan and assisting faculty in incorporating diversity and inclusion in the curriculum. Jack Brown began the new position of deputy CIO in the Office of Information Technology on July 16. He will initially focus on the department's technology initiatives, change and service management and technology planning. Brown will partner with John Jones, who will continue to serve as interim CIO for an extended time. Read more>>
C. Brigid Welch retired as dean of the University Library as of June 30 after a career in libraries that spanned 40 years. Lynn Beck, dean of Gladys L. Benerd School of Education, is serving as the interim dean of the University Library in addition to her role as dean of the School of Education. Read more>>
Jonathan Latta '00 was appointed assistant dean of the Conservatory of Music. He began the new position on July 1. Latta was selected in a national search to fill the position after former assistant dean David Chase '94, '01, accepted the position of vice dean of academic affairs at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles. Terri Johnson was appointed as the new director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. She began her new position on August 1. Johnson was previously the director for the Center for Educational Technology and Innovation (CETI) at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisc. Read more>>
Eileen Camfield has been appointed director of University writing programs. Camfield has served as the interim director of University writing programs for 2013-14. Read more>>
Ryan Griffith was appointed director of International Programs and Services. He will begin his new role at Pacific on September 10. Griffith is executive director for international education at Upper Iowa University. Read more>>
Development and Alumni Relations
Bill Johnson was appointed associate vice president for development effective August 6. Johnson recently completed four years at the University of San Francisco where he led development efforts in global initiatives, major gifts and parent giving. Read more>> He fills the position vacated by Janet Dial '89, '10, who accepted the position of vice president for advancement at California State University, Los Angeles, in May.
Steve Jacobson, associate vice president for student life, who oversees housing and dining services, will also be serving as interim associate vice president for student life over diversity and community engagement, except for the Office of Disability Services, which now reports to the dean of students. The position was vacated when Lisa Cooper accepted a position as dean of enrollment services at San Joaquin Delta College this past May.
Lynn King, assistant vice president for student life, who oversees campus recreation and new student programs, is also serving as the interim dean of students. The position was vacated by Joanna Royce-Davis who accepted the position of vice president for student life/dean of students at Pacific Lutheran University. The Office of Disability Services, which is now under the dean of students, will also report to King.
Christine Fluter is interim associate director for the Women's Center and will be the primary contact for that office at this time. The position of director of the Women's Center was vacated when Corrie Martin left Pacific last June to accompany her spouse, Professor Marisela Ramos, who accepted a position at the Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts. The Women's Center also reports directly to Serjio Acevedo, director of Multicultural Affairs.
Business and Finance
Kenneth M. Mullen, who served as controller and associate vice president for business and finance at Pacific for the last two years, took over as vice president for business and finance on Monday, May 12. Mullen was selected following a national search for a successor to Patrick D. Cavanaugh who retired in May. Read more>>
