Network Improvements Coming to University of the Pacific
Pacific's Technology organization is in the midst of a multi-phase upgrade to the University's network infrastructure. The existing network is no longer able to fully support the number of connecting users and accompanying devices, especially mobile devices such as wireless phones and tablets.
This upgrade is a foundational project to directly support Pacific 2020's strategies, including the creation of blended learning environments through the use of innovative distance learning technologies. Many projects that will originate from Pacific 2020 will place additional demands on the network infrastructure. The upgrade will provide a network robust enough to meet the demands of known network dependent 2020 projects and nimble enough to allow for further expansion.
The new network hardware/software is being introduced into the existing infrastructure in 13 independent phases and will run in parallel with the existing network until all phases are completed. Each phase will contain detailed planning, including testing and back-out plans. The goal is to implement the upgrade with minimal to no impact on mission-critical services. The project will run through the summer with completion targeted for October 2014.
The next two planned upgrades for the month of July will take place during the following dates/times:
July 17 - July 18, 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
July 23 - July 24, 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
During this period our technical staff will be making changes to our network which could affect services. We do not expect any impact to the network due to redundant circuits in place. However, despite our best efforts user network services may be impacted during this time.
