LMS Review - Your Help Requested

Jan 28, 2015

As an important step to meet the goals of Pacific2020, Provost Pallavicini convened a Learning Management System (LMS) Task Force as a sign of the deep commitment the University has to embrace the appropriate technologies to provide the best student and faculty experience for traditional, blended, and distance course offerings (see Goal 1.3).

Pacific's LMS Review is now officially underway, and your participation and help are needed in this process. The Task Force members and the Provost look forward to the opportunity to work with all of you on this foundational component for the University and want to thank each of you in advance for your time and support in making this effort a success.

After an initial review of peer and aspirant peer LMS adoption processes, as well as a discussion of viable LMS options for Pacific's current and future needs, the Task Force has recommended the review of three Learning Management Systems: Brightspace (D2L), Canvas (Instructure), and Sakai. To that end, the Task Force has engaged stakeholders to serve on the LMS Vendor Vetting Group, a representative group of faculty and staff charged with thoroughly vetting each LMS product.

In addition to these experts from our community, it  is critically important to have your participation in this LMS review.

To help in your participation, an LMS Review Site (SharePoint) has been created where all faculty, staff and students can review the LMS vendor video demonstrations, roll-up your sleeves and practice in all three different LMS "sandboxes," and evaluate each of the LMSs.

The Task Force will post related documents and all relevant information related to the LMS Review process so that everyone is aware of the process and progress.

This LMS Review Site is now open. Access to the three demonstrations and LMS sandboxes will open no later than February 2 and close February 20. New content will be added regularly.

We encourage everyone to spend time comparing the various LMSs and provide feedback between February 2 and February 20. Again, your participation is very important.

The Task Force will submit its recommendation to the Provost March 1.

To facilitate ongoing communication, please direct any questions and recommendations regarding the LMS Review to Tom Carlson, Project Manager, at tcarlson@pacific.edu.
