Benefits news: Tips for a safe healthy summer and traveling on a budget

Jul 1, 2015

The month of July means summer is in full swing! With the warm weather and the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables, it's one of the best months to get outside, get active and eat well.

Here are just a few tips from the Delta Health Systems newsletter to take advantage of this glorious time of year, while staying healthy and safe at the same time:

  • Don't forget the sunscreen!  SPF 30 or higher please.
  • Drink up! Stay hydrated by drinking extra water during the warmer months.
  • Go to the garden!  Load up meals with seasonal produce high in antioxidants.
  • Get up and active! Move your body, hike, walk, bike, swim, anything!  Just choose something you enjoy.
  • Grilled, not charred! Charred meats are not healthy. And choosing leaner meats or fish helps fight the burn.

Making the most of your vacation dollars

Summer is vacation time and everyone needs time to rest and take a break from routine. And everyone should be able to have a memorable and relaxing vacation without having to cut corners.

Here are just a few of the tips for budget-conscious travelers available through your Employee Assistance Plan's Guidance Resources online.

  • Smart Air Travel - research airfares from all airports in your area for best prices, the best time and day to fly; avoid peak travel times
  • Thinking Locally - day trips are less expensive and just as rewarding. Take advantage of nearby  parks and lakes, museums and amusement parks.
  • Planning Your Trip - pack lightly and travel together to cut cost
  • Using the Internet/Resources - dozens of travel sites offer discounts and package deals for huge savings
