City police dispose of suspicious device near campus

May 5, 2015

A suspicious device reported on private property across from campus was safely disposed of at about 9 a.m. Monday by the Stockton Police Department.

The small object was found by non-university residents of an apartment building next door to Manor Hall, an unused and empty former residence hall at the northeast corner of Pacific Avenue and West Stadium Way. The object was found behind the apartment building.

The area was cordoned off as a precaution and a half dozen apartment residents were taken to the DeRosa University Center for about an hour.

As a precaution, Stockton police decided to destroy the small object in place. Pacific Avenue was blocked for a few minutes and traffic diverted around the area. The device was destroyed without incident, resulting in a loud noise. Stockton police later said the device was a pipe bomb.

The area in front of Manor Hall has been reopened.
