Pacific statement on response to Sept. 10 allegations

Sep 25, 2015

Pacific takes any allegations of sexual misconduct extremely seriously, and the wellbeing of our students is our paramount concern. On Thursday, Sept. 10, we received information in an anonymous letter that raised concerns warranting a thorough investigation. We notified the Stockton Police Department and identified an experienced and respected independent investigator who began interviews on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

These types of allegations are serious and we, like all higher education institutions, strive to maintain confidentiality both during and after the investigation in order to respect the privacy interests of those involved. However, the former student and the former member of the coaching staff have stated that the relationship was consensual. Additionally, they have maintained that at no time was a scholarship ever mentioned let alone put in jeopardy.

Nevertheless, we undertook a careful investigation of all issues raised in the letter. As information comes to light that suggests further action is required, we are committed to taking all appropriate steps. This investigation closed in mid October and student-athletes and other members of the Athletics community were notified of this fact in an Oct. 15 email. However, should information come to light that suggests further action is required, we are committed to taking all appropriate steps.

Pacific has a long-standing commitment to ensuring a campus conducive to a safe and productive learning and working environment and we continue to challenge ourselves to develop best practices for prevention and response to sexual assault and misconduct. Our approach includes mandatory ongoing student, faculty, and staff sexual assault prevention education and training. In addition, a campus taskforce has been working on an updated Title IX policy, which will soon be finalized and approved.
