Progress continues for Student Success Committee

Sep 16, 2015

Several important projects designed to increase student support at Pacific are moving forward as the Student Success Committee begins its second year.

During the summer, as the projects funded by the Strategic Investment Fund became a reality, several positions were filled to support student success:

  • Intensive English Program Assistant Director - Rebekah McCormack has been hired as the new assistant director of the Intensive English Program. Faculty can contact McCormack to learn about a variety of ESL courses as well as workshops to develop language skills. She will also offer faculty and staff ESL workshops to help them assist with international students' needs.
  • General Academic Tutoring Manager - Martin Gonzales was selected as the new general academic tutoring manager. Faculty and students can contact Gonzales to organize tutoring for undergraduate courses.
  • Developmental Writing Instructor - John Allen was hired as a new developmental writing instructor.

Other new positions in process of being filled include two student support services specialists to lead referral and case management and a director of African-American/black student support and success.

Progress has also been made on other student success initiative goals, including:

  • Funding for supplemental instruction in biology, mathematics, and economics courses
  • Selecting an early alert tool, with implementation of an early warning system expected to pilot in fall 2015
  • Registrar Ann Gillen being assigned to lead the new advising/degree audit tool (DegreeWorks) implementation planned in AY16

The Student Success Committee is already at work on new initiatives for the 2015-16 academic year, which include:

  • Monitoring current intervention practices
  • Developing campuswide activities to facilitate discussion about student success
  • Continued research into our current policies
  • Developing a website presence
  • Increased communications from the committee to the campus community

The committee looks forward to more conversation about these important initiatives in the coming year and developing greater discussion around student success at Pacific.
