Employer panel explores potential Pacific partnerships during External Relations Committee meeting

Recruiters from United Airlines and Williams-Sonoma participated in an interactive employer panel to discuss their companies' recruiting process and explore potential partnerships with University of the Pacific during the November External Relations Committee meeting held at the San Francisco Campus.

The External Relations Committee, led by Associate Vice President Stacy McAfee, with representatives from all three campuses and all divisions, including the Career Resource Center, had the opportunity to engage in a lively conversation with the panelists about what they are looking for in potential recruits, what types of positions are available and how they may have partnered with other universities in the past.

Committee members discussed the opportunities at Pacific that facilitate recruiting, such as annual career fairs, and also offered suggestions of other potential partnerships for employee training opportunities, such as leadership development and the effective use of data analytics.

Panelist Kathleen Dwyer is the talent acquisition manager for Williams-Sonoma Inc., headquartered in San Francisco, which comprises eight brands, including Pottery Barn. Williams-Sonoma is one of the largest e-commerce retailers in the United States, with retail stores in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia and the United Kingdom, and third-party franchises in countries in the Middle East and the Philippines.

Panelist Amy Pellatz is the senior manager for customer service for United Airlines San Francisco Hub. Headquartered in Chicago, United is the world's largest airline when measured by the number of destinations served, operating comprehensive domestic and international routes out of nine hubs.

Neither of these employers have an established recruiting partnership with Pacific, and both indicated a strong interest in pursuing a stronger relationship with the university. In particular, Pellatz discussed a new internship program they are preparing to launch that might be a good fit for a university partnership. Dwyer indicated a broad opportunity for entry-level hires, which would be a good fit for Pacific graduates planning to go immediately into the workforce following graduation.

The employer panel was a new addition to the External Relations Committee meeting and may become a regular feature. The meeting also included discussion exploring more effective ways to partner with our neighboring community colleges, with a community college panel planned for a future meeting. McAfee also shared External Relations priorities for 2016-17 and gave community and governmental relations updates.
