Greetings Colleagues,

Here are some faculty development events and other opportunities I'd like to share with you:   

14-Day Writing Challenge Results
Earlier this month, Pacific concluded its first 14-Day Writing Challenge, based on the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) 14-Day Writing Challenge.  Nearly three dozen new, tenured and NTT faculty members committed to schedule time each day writing anything that advanced their research/creative scholarship agendas.  

Many participants let us know that this Challenge was a way to get started with a writing agenda, and that it helped with goal setting and to reinforce the writing habit:  

"The opportunity to participate was a great reminder of the need to re-prioritize my writing."  

"I found the writing challenge helpful ... in maintaining daily writing practice, having some additional accountability and also hearing about others' challenges and successful tactics for meeting their writing goals."  

We plan to offer this Writing Challenge again at the beginning of the fall semester. We are working on improvements to the platform we used based on the feedback we received. Keep your eyes open for the improved Pacific Writing Challenge in fall 2016.   

Fulbright Scholar Program Competition Open for 2017-8 Travel Awards
Dr. Bill Herrin, Director of the School of International Studies (SIS) and University Fulbright Scholar Program Representative, has provided the following update on exciting opportunities to strengthen your global credentials:  

As promised in an earlier newsletter, I'm letting you know that the U.S. State Department's Fulbright Scholar Program has announced its 2016 competition for 2017-18 travel awards. Take a look - even if you're just contemplating an application - and you will see opportunities in virtually all academic disciplines and in a wide variety of countries across six continents.  Most awards have an August 1 application deadline, but a few may be sooner.

To further pique your interest and answer your questions about this program, the Provost's Office and SIS will host two information sessions on Thursday, March 24. The first, 12 - 1 p.m., will feature Fulbright Ambassador Daris Hale, a professor in the School of Music at Texas State University. The second, 5:30 - 7 p.m., will feature a panel of Fulbright faculty alumni who will share their thoughts, insights and experiences. They will also share the sense of anticipation, adventure, and maybe even anxiety that is such an integral part of the Fulbright experience. Both events will take place in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).  

We will also host student Fulbright information sessions on Tuesday, March 29, in the Bechtel International Center. A representative from the State Department's Institute of International Education (IIE), which sponsors the student program, will lead two sessions. The first, at 4 p.m., is for faculty members who may participate in Pacific's campus screening committee (interview of applicants) and for faculty who want to learn more so they can better identify and encourage students to apply. The second, at 5 p.m., will be a general presentation for students. Faculty who may serve as applicants' mentors for the 2016-17 cycle and beyond may want to attend the second session as well.

New Faculty Luncheon
Thursday, March 3, 12 - 1 p.m. in the President's Room. Lunch is provided. This month's topic is "Challenging Scenarios in the Classroom," presented by Chris Goff, Assistant Provost for Diversity. Look for an Outlook invitation in your email, or please RSVP to Erika Greet at 209.946.2551 or egreet@pacific.edu so that we can plan for lunch accordingly.

Chair Development Luncheon
Thursday, April 21, 12 - 1pm in the Library Community Room. Lunch is provided. April's topic is "Having Challenging Conversations," presented by Chris Goff, Assistant Provost for Diversity. Look for an Outlook invitation in your email, or please RSVP to Erika Greet at 209.946.2551 or egreet@pacific.edu so that we can plan for lunch accordingly.  

TEC Grant Deadline (Second Call)
The deadline for Technology in Education Committee (TEC) grant proposals are due March 11. Small grant funding up to $2,500 per proposal is available for innovative technology instruction or technology conferences. Visit the TEC Sakai site for streamlined application and selection criteria. Please contact TEC Chair Heidi Stevenson, hstevenson@pacific.edu, for more information.  

Academic Facilities Improvement Committee Proposal Deadline
The Academic Facilities Improvement Committee is seeking proposals for improvements and upgrades (valued over $1,000) to existing academic facilities. The deadline is March 25 for consideration of proposals for this semester. For more information and the proposal form, please visit the Committee's webpage.  

CAPD Grants and Awards Availability Announced
The Committee for Academic Planning and Development (CAPD) is pleased to announce the availability of a number of grants and awards available to members of the Pacific faculty. The deadline for all applications is Friday, April 1, 2016, by 5:00 p.m.   The following grants and awards are available for Spring 2016:

- Travel Grants - Small Project Grants - Eberhardt University Priority Award - Rupley-Church Grants for International Relations
- Hoefer Prize for Leadership in Experiential Learning - Eberhardt Teacher/Scholar Award
