Faculty Affairs Update

Office of the ProvostJan 20, 2016

Greetings Colleagues,

Welcome back! I would like to take a moment and share with you some of the exciting events and opportunities coming up for faculty development.

Pacific's 14-Day Writing Challenge Starts Soon!
Making time for research and creative work is challenging at any stage of an academic career, but particularly after tenure, when service and other demands seem to multiply. Start the spring semester right by "paying yourself first!"

Starting next Monday, January 25, Pacific will embark on its own 14-Day Writing Challenge. It is based on the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) 14-Day Writing Challenge.

For the 14 days between January 25 and February 7, 2016, participants commit to schedule 30 minutes (or more or less; you set your own goals) daily for writing. Remember that "writing" can be anything that advances your research/creative scholarship agenda.

You'll report your progress to a small group of other faculty members participating across all disciplines - the goal is to support each other to take time to write - not to discuss or comment on the details of each other's work. Please use this form to enroll in the 14-Day Writing Challenge or contact Sarah Waltz (swaltz@pacific.edu) or Berit Gundersen (bgundersen@pacific.edu) for more information.

New Faculty Luncheon: this Thursday, January 21, 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Regents Room. Lunch is provided. This month's topic is "Semester Planning." Learn from colleagues how to plan your semester so that you can continue your scholarship, teach and have work/life balance. Look for an Outlook invitation in your email, or please RSVP to Erika Greet at 209.946.2551 or egreet@pacific.edu so that we can plan for lunch accordingly.

Chair Development Luncheon: next Thursday, January 28, 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Library Community Room. Lunch is provided. This month's topic is "Faculty Evaluation: Best Practices." Look for an Outlook invitation in your email, or please RSVP to Erika Greet at 209.946.2551 or egreet@pacific.edu so that we can plan for lunch accordingly.

Save the Dates:
National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) Workshop On February 18, Pacific will host a workshop entitled "Rethinking Mentoring: How to Build a Community of Inclusion, Support and Accountability," facilitated by Rosemarie Roberts, NCFDD coach. This three-hour workshop begins at noon and is open to all department chairs, program directors, faculty leaders and senior faculty. It includes a working lunch. Please RSVP to Erika Greet at 209.946.2551 or egreet@pacific.edu so that we can plan for lunch accordingly.

Research Day Pacific's Annual Research Day is April 30, on the Stockton Campus. Please encourage faculty, staff and students to think of presenting their research to the University community.
