Benefits news: May is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month

May 9, 2016

May is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month, an internationally recognized time to observe health and fitness in the work place — encouraging quality lifestyles.

A full-time employee spends the majority of his/her week at the workplace, yet most ignore their health during this time. Practicing healthy lifestyle habits can take a little more effort at work, but it can be done!

This month-long observance was originally established as "Global Employee Health & Fitness Day," but was extended by the National Association for Health & Fitness (NAHF). This nonprofit organization was founded in 1979 by the U.S. President's Council with a mission to "improve the quality of life for individuals in the U.S. through the promotion of physical fitness, sports and healthy lifestyles." NAHF realized that sustainable behavior changes do not happen in a day. Observing employee wellness for one month is more likely to facilitate lifestyle changes by implementing healthy activities on an ongoing basis.
