Educational Effectiveness Update

  • Welcome New Director of Academic Assessment, Dr. Glen Rogers
    • Cyd Jenefsky, vice provost for strategy and educational effectiveness, is pleased to announce that Dr. Glen Rogers is Pacific's new director of academic assessment effective Nov. 10. Rogers joined Pacific from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he served as the director of educational research and evaluation. He holds a PhD and an MA in social psychology from the University of Kentucky and a BA in psychology from the University of Texas, Austin. For more than 30 years, Rogers has studied and evaluated Alverno's ability-based curriculum, which has been nationally recognized for decades as an exemplar of using assessment to enhance learning. During the month of November, Rogers will begin meeting with Pacific's assessment chairs to learn about their programs and their approaches to assessment of student learning. His office will be located in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Vice Provost Jenefsky would like to thank the search committee, led by Justin Low, associate professor in the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education and faculty fellow in assessment and accreditation, for their hard work during the search process.
  • Reaccreditation/WSCUC Update: Meaning, Quality and Integrity of Degrees
    • New to this reaccreditation cycle is the component of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) Institutional Report called Meaning, Quality and Integrity of Degrees (MQID). The Meaning component explores what it means for a Pacific graduate to hold a degree from our institution: what are the distinctive experiences and learning outcomes that are unique to Pacific and how are these related to our Mission? The Quality element examines the processes by which Pacific consistently ensures the quality and rigor of all degrees, at each rank. Integrity of the degrees asks: is a Pacific degree more than the sum of its parts? Are all parts of the educational experience aligned and intentional? Does Pacific deliver what it promises? What evidence do we have for this and how do we articulate these outcomes to our internal and external stakeholders? These are the questions the MQID working group is considering.
    • The MQID working group has representatives from all three campuses and every school, as well as from Student Life. Its co-chairs recently attended an MQID workshop where WSCUC officials and representatives from universities who have recently engaged in the accreditation reaffirmation process shared their insights and ideas about completing the self-study on the meaning, quality, and integrity of degrees. The Pacific MQID group has started to investigate approaches that other institutions have found positive and productive, including the promising Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) approach to qualitatively and quantitatively agree upon a baseline set of reference points for what students should know and be able to do to merit the award of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees - regardless of their field of study.
    • In the near future, the MQID working group will reach out to the broad university community to start the conversation around who we are, what we do, how we ensure the quality of what we do, and how we communicate our story to both internal and external stakeholders.
