Highlights from the Board of Regents Meeting, October 20-21, 2016

Highlights from each Board of Regents meeting will be reported in the Pacific Insider to inform the campus community of the Board's actions and major discussions. The Board plays an important role as the governing body of the university, responsible for the quality and integrity of the education provided to students and the financial sustainability of the university. Board members are experts from business, education, health, law and other fields, and most are alumni. Board members are volunteers and pay for their meeting travel and expenses. The chair and chair-elect of the Academic Council, the president and president-elect of the Pacific Alumni Association and the president and vice president of the Associated Students of University of the Pacific are recognized as non-voting liaison representatives to the Board and provide a report at each meeting.

Major highlights from the October meeting:

  • Update of the University's Strategic Plan   

    • Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria Pallavicini presented the development of Pacific 2025, the University's refresh of its strategic plan, Pacific 2020. Five strategies have been identified for Pacific 2025: Thriving Students; an Integrated 21st Century Liberal Arts Experience; Leading Health Care Education; Growth and Financial Sustainability; and People, Culture and Infrastructure. The concept of a new school of integrated health was discussed and Regents were receptive, recommending a focus on current and future programs that would address market needs such as health care informatics. Pacific 2025 is being shaped through several University committees and forums and will be brought to the Regents in February.   

  • Enrollment Management 

    • J. Michael Thompson, Associate Vice President and Vice Provost for Enrollment, presented information on the recruiting, admission and enrollment management processes, and an update on Pacific's fall 2016 enrollment, noting that as of the week of Oct. 10, fall 2017 applications were at 95 percent of fall 2015 applications on the same date, and 170 percent of fall 2016 applications on the same date.  

    • The Board approved a Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) request supporting the implementation of Pacific's Strategic Enrollment Plan (SEP), focused on broadening diversity, invigorating undergraduate enrollment, and building institutional capacity in Admission, Financial Aid, and Enrollment Management Marketing. The SIF allocation is $1,578,229 in base funds over two years and $816,000 in one-time funds over three years (for reengineering Banner processes and expanded outreach to prospective students). The measures of the SEP's success are reaching enrollment growth targets and sustaining enrollment.  

  • Diversity 

    • Regents were briefed on the University's ongoing efforts to broaden diversity and ensure an inclusive campus climate, and discussed appropriate Board oversight on these matters. The importance of openness and respect inside and outside the classroom emerged from discussions on academic affairs. The Regents also addressed diversity in the context of their own operations and behavior, noting the importance of continuing to diversify the composition of the Board, and ensuring acceptance of divergent views in discussions about issues facing the university.  

  • Expansion of Compensation Committee to HR Committee 

    • The Compensation Committee will change its name to the Human Resources Committee and expand its role which historically has been focused on the compensation of the president and other executives. The HR Committee will also have oversight of compensation philosophy and practices for all employees and monitor leadership development, employee talent development, culture and climate. In addition, the committee will monitor the university's commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and inclusive culture. The expansion of the committee acknowledges board level visibility to a more holistic approach to the well-being of Pacific employees.  

  • Presentation by McGeorge School of Law (lunch program highlight student experiences) 

    • McGeorge School of Law Dean Jay Mootz, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Michael Colatrella, and Associate Dean for Experiential Learning Dorothy Landsberg presented an overview of McGeorge's programs highlighting the recent changes to the JD curriculum to position students as "tomorrow's lawyers." McGeorge has added an MSL and other programs and has intensified its experiential learning and career placement services. JD student Nicole Low '17 talked about how the program has prepared her to pursue a career as a district attorney through practical experience in the Sacramento DA's office. MSL student Michelle Teran '17 is a political legislative assistant working in advocacy and policy formation for United Farm Workers of America, who desired to have a fuller understanding of the law and legal issues in her work. The master's program provided the level of education and knowledge she was seeking.
