Feedback Sought on Academic Technology Blueprint

In spring of 2016, in order to identify gaps in Pacific's academic technology and develop a draft blueprint to address them, Provost Maria Pallavicini convened a group of faculty, staff and administrators that included Technology in Education Chair Jeff Shafer, Vice Provost Vernon Smith, University Librarian Mary Somerville, and Vice President of Technology and Chief Information Officer Art Sprecher. This review of Pacific's academic technology was intentionally complementary to Pacific Technology's strategic planning process for institutional technology.

The working group developed a blueprint to guide technology-related staffing decisions, resource allocation, and space design in support of teacher-scholar initiatives at University of the Pacific. To confirm national trends and clarify Pacific's directions, the working group completed a review of professional literature, association reports, and peer comparisons. This knowledge base informed a survey administered to Technology in Education Committee (TEC) members to establish educational technology priorities and technology project directions.  

Following this, the working group met and worked with TEC members over the summer to further develop the blueprint. This collective effort, led by Jeff Shafer, has been praised by the Provost as a positive model for faculty leadership and a showpiece for the collaboration of faculty, staff and administrators.  

This collaborative work resulted in the draft Academic Technology Blueprint, which proposes an increase in organizational capacity for sustained excellence in faculty teaching and student learning at Pacific. The Blueprint is aligned with Pacific 2020, the Academic Plan and the Strategic Enrollment Plan. Guided by these frameworks, the Blueprint presents a four-year phased approach for fully supporting faculty and students as they navigate the digital world.  

The Blueprint proposes three main strategies to leverage technologies to build on the strength, relevance, and reputation of Pacific's academic programs.

  • Modernize Learning Spaces
    • Pacific will expand and modernize its physical classrooms and digital learning spaces to best serve students in the 21st century.
  • Enhance Personalized Learning
    • The deepest learning and highest impact occurs when faculty tailor class material and course activities to individual students' knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Extend Support for Faculty and Student Scholarship
    • Academic technologies provide tools and rich environments for accelerating and promoting faculty and student scholarly and creative work.  

At this time, these are concepts; funding for initiatives proposed in the Blueprint will need to be aligned with Pacific 2025.   The draft Blueprint is now available on the TEC SharePoint site for review and feedback via a faculty and staff survey.
