Community outreach opportunity through Rotary Read-In

Jan 22, 2018

The 27th Annual Rotary "Read-In" will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. During the Read-In, members of the local community will spend about an hour at a local elementary school to read a book they have purchased to students in each kindergarten through third-grade class in Stockton. Last year, more than 800 community members, including many Pacific faculty and staff, participated in the event. The books are then donated to the schools to enhance their libraries.

The Office of External Relations is coordinating the readers for two schools — one in Stockton Unified and one in Lincoln Unified school district. Our colleagues in Student Life and Athletics also are coordinating school efforts. Jim Dugoni, senior director of estate and gift planning, is a member of the North Stockton Rotary Club, and continues to serve on the event's steering committee.

If you would like to participate, please contact Mike Klocke, community relations director, at mklocke@pacific.edu. School assignments will go out in early February. Note: Please be sure to clear your participation with your supervisor in advance and complete the Volunteer Community Service Request form

The Stockton Barnes and Noble in the Weberstown Mall, a longtime, loyal supporter of Beyond Our Gates, has a Rotary Read-In book drive starting Feb. 1. The store will have a large display with selected books for each of the grades (K through 3) and will offer a 20% discount to volunteers purchasing a book to read (Please identify that the book is for the Rotary Read-In at checkout to receive the discount). A significant portion of their sales will be donated to the Stockton San Joaquin Public Library.

Please consider taking part in a great annual event.
