Pacific 2020R Implementation Update: Initiative teams underway

Office of the ProvostMar 21, 2018

Last fall, University of the Pacific began the implementation of Pacific 2020 Refresh (P2020R), our refreshed strategic plan, which focuses on two themes, Students with Purpose and Agile and Dynamic Growth, and will guide the university's work for the next five years.

This is an update on the progress of P2020R initiative teams, composed of faculty, staff and students, working to integrate undergraduate student support, integrate graduate student support and become a unified university. Highlighted accomplishments include:

  • Undergraduate Student Support:  A team of P2020R initiative leaders visited peer and aspirant peer institutions to examine orientation, first-year experience seminars, and academic/career advising services. A pre-orientation course in Canvas piloted in spring 2018 is being expanded for summer 2018 to include items formerly sent to students in a paper new student checklist. New early alert referral process enhancements launched January 2018
  • Graduate Student Support:  A comprehensive review of inconsistencies and gaps in graduate program and/or student policies is underway. Approval was obtained for major revisions to the graduate section of the 2018-2019 Academic Catalog. Graduate policies in the Faculty Handbook and graduate student conduct policies are now being examined. To support the re-establishment of the Graduate School, an Ensuring Excellence in Graduate Education Across our Three-City University SIF proposal was approved by the Board of Regents at its February 2018 meeting.
  • Creating a Transformative Liberal Arts Experience:  Preliminary efforts launched to define a shared set of core student learning outcomes and metrics for the Pacific Liberal Arts experience.
  • Building a Unified University:  Community-led prioritization of Pacific's culture, policies, and practices and their alignment with our shared values were assessed through phased surveys and more than 50 focus groups. To learn more about this ongoing effort, visit the Values Initiative SharePoint site. Reorganization of administrative structures in five key areas is underway:  business and finance, student life, marketing and communications, enrollment management, and information technology. Next steps include reviewing processes that may be enhanced or streamlined.

In addition to P2020R initiative teams that launched last fall, three new initiative teams launched this spring:

  • Undergraduate Academic Support Services Initiative:  defining and examining holistic academic support services.
  • Graduate Pre-Matriculation and Orientation Initiative: aiming to strengthen the graduate student experience from the point in which the program director recommends the applicant for admission through orientation and into the first day of courses.
  • Graduate Academic/Career Support Initiative:  identifying a plan to enhance the management, effectiveness, and coordination of graduate academic support services.

The Cabinet Strategic Oversight Committee (CSOC), which provides university leadership for P2020R initiatives, will soon release a comprehensive status report to the university community on implementation and accomplishments to date. For questions, comments or suggestions about the implementation or communication of P2020R initiatives, please use the feedback form on the SharePoint site (Pacific login required).
