Pacific Tennis:Pacific to Participate in ITA Regional’s
The Pacific womens and mens tennis teams are heading to the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University this weekend. The Tigers womens team will be one of 14 teams competing Friday Oct. 23 Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Pacific mens tennis team will be in the midst of 128 singles and 64 doubles teams competing in Berkeley.
Womens Team:
Doubles play starts early Friday morning at 8 a.m. with juniors Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine) and Kateryna Nezhura (Kiev, Ukraine) taking on St. Marys Molly Aloia and Alisa Spitzer. Also competing at 8 a.m. are freshmen Christina Goehl (Karlsruhe, Germany) and Julia Hansen (Hamburg, Germany). The pair will face Samantha Smith and Lina Xu from the University of Washington.
Senior Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda) and junior Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Sao Paulo, Brazil) get a little bit later start against Cals Stephany Change and Nelly Radeva. Their match is set to begin at 8:45 a.m.
Widjaja is the 12th seed for the singles tournament. She and Nezhura each received first round byes and will play start Friday afternoon.
Mens Team:
The Pacific mens tennis team will be in the midst of 128 singles and 64 doubles teams competing at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Norwest Regional Championships this weekend. Play will run from Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 26. Champions from the main draws will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Junior Artem Gramma (Krivoj Roj, Ukraine) is the only Tiger seeded at the tournament. The no. 17 seed will face Portlands Geoff Hernandez Friday morning at 10 a.m. Also competing for Pacific Friday morning are senior Vergerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) and junior Fernando Ristow (Curitaba, Brazil). Veskimagi faces University of Washingtons Alex Rosinski at 9:45 a.m., while Ristow will not take the court until 11 a.m. against Sacramento States Georg Anastopouls.
Gramma and Ristow will be the Tigers only doubles team competing this weekend. They will see Santa Claras Mauricio Villa and Nick Buckley on Saturday at 8 a.m.
