Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Fall to No. 3 Pepperdine in Four, 3-1

Pacific played their final home game of the 2010 season on Saturday, April 10, falling 3-1 to No. 3 Pepperdine. With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 8-20 and 0-20 in the MPSF, while the Waves improved to 15-8 and 13-7 in conference action.

The game scores for the match were: 24-30, 30-21, 30-19, and 30-26.

Before the match the Tigers honored the four seniors, Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii), Clay Ostrander (Wheaton, Ill.), Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), and Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.), who all played in their final home match.

The two teams battled through 13 tie scores and six lead changes in the first game. With the Tigers trailing 17-16, a five point rally put Pacific out in front 21-17. Two kills by sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) helped to boost the Tiger rally. At 23-21, a kill from freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) followed by one from Gornik, gave Pacific a four point lead at 25-21. A three point run at 27-24 would close out the game for the Tigers. Freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) started the rally with a kill and ended the game by acing the Waves' defense, as Pacific captured the first game, 30-24.

The Waves started off the second game with four straight points, taking a 4-0 lead. Vukicevic successfully attacked from the middle to earn Pacific a sideout, but it was followed by two more Pepperdine points, as they took a 6-1 lead over the Tigers. Down 10-5, Pacific moved within three at 10-7, with a kill from sophomore Sean Daley, which he followed up with a service ace. Trailing 26-16, the Tigers registered a four point rally, including a kill from Daley and a service ace by Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.), to bring the score to 26-20. But it would not be enough, as Pepperdine even the match 1-1, with a 30-22 win.

With the Waves leading 7-5 in the third game, a five point rally jumped their lead to seven at 12-5. Still trailing at 24-13, the Tigers scored two behind Daley, who racked a kill and blocked a Waves' attacker, to bring the score to 24-15. Pacific couldn't find their rhythm, as Pepperdine scored three points at 27-19 to take the third game, 30-19.

Two kills by Gornik with the game even 5-5, pushed the Tigers in front 7-5. The Waves answered back with a four point rally to take a 9-7 lead. Later in the game with Pacific trailing 22-18, a Pepperdine service error and a solo block by sophomore Nicholaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) brought the Tigers within two at 22-20. Pepperdine rallied the next four to take a 26-20 lead. With the Waves serving a game point at 29-23, Pacific earned a sideout, to take the score to 29-24. The Tigers pushed two more points with a kill from senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) and another Pepperdine error, bringing the score to 29-26. But the Waves closed out the game, 30-26, and match, 3-1.

Gornik had 12 kills for the Tigers. J.D. Schleppenback and Maurice Torres each had 17 kills for the Waves.

"It has been the most fun we have ever had," said Bauhs of his play at Pacific. "This match and season has been a hard ride, but extremely enjoyable at the same time. There is no one we would rather be playing with."

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, April 16 to take on UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
