    Pacific Men's Waterpolo: Pacific Falls To No. 2 UCLA In Home Opener, 10-9

    In the season home opener, Pacific's men's water polo team lost to No. 2 UCLA, 10-9. With the loss the Tigers fell to 9-5 (0-1 MPSF) on the season while the Bruins improved to 9-3 (1-1 MPSF) on the year.

    At the start of the first, Pacific took the 1-0 lead when senior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) scored a goal at the 5:25 mark, but the Bruins countered at the 3:08 mark on a goal form Jacob Murphy to tie the game at 1-1.

    Freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) kicked off the second quarter by winning the sprint, he then put Pacific up 2-1 at the 5:47 spot with his first goal of the day. UCLA responded at the 3:05 and 2:30 points with goals from Bret Lathrope and Cristianio Mirarchi to take the 3-2 lead. With :15 remaining on the clock senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) tied the game at three goals apiece when he tallied his first goal of the contest.

    With the tied game at 3-3 at the start of the third, UCLA's Aimone Barabino and Clinton Jorth tallied back-to-back goals at the 7:17 and 5:46 spots to give the Bruins the two point advantage. The Tigers countered 21 seconds later to come within one of UCLA on a goal from sophomore Jason Wensley (Concord, Calif.), but the Bruins gained the three point lead at the 4:25 and 1:50 marks with goals from Murphy and Griffin White. Pacific made it a 7-6 game on consecutive goals from junior Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) and Gullikson with 1:36 and :47 remaining on the clock respectively. UCLA regained the two point advantage when Ben Hohl found the back of the net to put the Bruins up 8-6.

    In the final frame UCLA's Cristianio Mirarchi extended the Bruin lead to three with a goal at the 6:09 mark, however Erdelyi countered at the 3:22 mark with his second goal of the contest to make it a 9-7. Koning then scored Pacific's eighth goal of the game with 2:33 remaining in regulation to put the Tigers within one of the Bruins. With 2:05 remaining in the quarter Cullen Hennessy found the back of the net to put the Bruins up by a pair of goals. The Tigers closed out the game with a goal from Erdelyi at the 1:40 mark but were unable to tally another goal to send the game into overtime before the end of regulation.

    Pacific was led by freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) who completed the hat trick against the Bruins, while freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded eight saves in the cage for Pacific.

    The Tigers resume action on Sunday, October 17 at 2 p.m. against Pepperdine at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
